MASTER SCULPTOR JAN ANTEUNIS. This stunning bronze believed to be King Leopold III of Belgium who reigned from 1934-1951 was done by Belgian sculptor Jan Anteunis who lived from 1896 to 1973. Sculpture's total height is approx. 19" including a 2 3/4" high, 8" square black marble base. The sculpture is signed on the back of the neck "J. Anteunis 1939". Anteunis studied drawing at the Ghent Academy until WWI when he went into exile in Liverpool, England. At the University of Liverpool he did his first apprenticeship with noted artist Richard Allen. After the liberation of Europe, he enrolled in the Ghent Academy and studied under sculptors Felix Mettepenninghen and Geo Verbanck. His works are known for evoking refined beauty and a soft realism. CONDITION: the sculpture is in superb condition with only the most minor abrasions to the base. (02-26418/BF). NON-GUN. $2,000-3,000.
